Court resumes trial in prosecutor-general assassination case

The Cairo Criminal Court postponed on Tuesday the trial session of the case involving defendants accused of murdering late prosecutor-general Hisham Barakat to 3 March.

The court also ordered the arrest of 14 witnesses and ordered the fining of another 16 for their absence.

The case includes 67 defendants, who are facing several charges that include establishing an illegal group, executing hostile operations against judges, army, and police officers, targeting diplomatic headquarters, and aiming to destroy state institutions.

Only 51 of them are detained while others are tried in absentia. The court is in the process of examining the case evidence.

Barakat was assassinated in a bomb attack on his convoy on 29 June 2015. The Ministry of Interior has previously declared that the operation was planned by the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood with the help of Hamas.
