Political parties should be national, not regional

There are more than 40 registered political parties with some merging (like TNA and URP to form Jubilee Party) and others coalescing (Nasa, comprising ODM, Ford-Kenya, Wiper and ANC).

Constitutionally, a political party should have a national character and promote and uphold national unity.

Therefore, the formation of ‘political’ parties to address and champion community interests seems strange.

Cases in point are Economic Freedom Party for Mandera County and Devolution Party of Kenya for Coast counties of Kwale, Kilifi, Taita-Taveta and Mombasa (DN, March 20).
