Absence of technical officials forced the organizers of the Fiba Zone Five Under-16 Championships to push the tip off date to Friday as the Egyptians expressed confidence they will prevail over their opponents at this event.

Stephen Nyakina the local organizing committee secretary on Thursday said the Fiba technical officials were expected in Mombasa on Thursday night thus forcing them to cancel the games Thursday start.

“We could not hold a technical meeting in the absence of the technical officials who were expected in Mombasa last night thus our decision to push the opening ceremony to today”, Nyakina said.

Egypt, Rwanda and Kenya were the only teams that had by Thursday arrived in Mombasa. Egypt have entered only in the under-16 girls’ category.

The tournament features both boys and girls’ competitions.

Speaking at the KPA Makande Gym after an afternoon training session, Egypt coach Mohamed Hamed said they had prepared well for the event and promised fireworks in Mombasa.

“We have a sound youth program back in Egypt which made it very easy for us to come up with the best 12 players to represent the country in this category”, Hamed said adding that their 3-on-3 team could not come since they are preparing for the World championships to be staged in France next month.

Egypt delegation head Nabil Ahmed said they had to a very tight schedule but had to honour the tournament due to the Egyptians long standing relationship with Kenya.

“We have very close ties with Kenya especially in sports thus our reason to present at least one team,” he said.
