Gladys Kamande, the terminally ill patient who melted hearts social media with her struggle to stay alive, has returned to the country after receiving treatment in India.

Kamande, whose collapsed lungs made her carry around an oxygen cylinder and a generator, can now breathe unaided for minutes and has regained her sight that was lost over seven years ago.

She arrived back home on Wednesday to a warm reception by family and friends some she had never been able to see as she met them while still blind.

Among those who received her was Ndungu Nyoro who led the online funds drive that saw Kenyans donate Sh7 million towards Ms Kamande’s.

Both Nyoro and Ms Kamande have thanked Kenyans for the support.

Ms Kamande, in a video shot by Nyoro, said:

“Kwa majina naitwa GLADYS WAIRIMU KAMANDE. Nilikuwa mgonjwa sana. Nilikuwa nimepotea macho 2010. Sikuwa na pumua, nilikuwa nabebanisha mitungi ya oxygen pamoja generator.

Lakini nikaja kwa Wakenya, tukawaomba msaada na mkakubali kutusaidia. Mtukasaidia na pesa zenu ba hata maombi.

Kwa saa hii macho yangu inaona. Nimekaa 7 years bila kuona. Nilienda na nikatibiwa India na sasa ninaona.

Kwa sasa niko sawa ninaona. Mungu amenisaidia. Nimeshukuru sana kwa wale wote mumenisaidia kwa maombi na fedha.

Mungu awabariki.”
