This comes after the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) demanded that the minister of basic education “provide a formal undertaking that all textbooks have been delivered by January 26”.

Speaking to the media at the Basic Education Sector Lekgotla on Monday‚ Kgetjepe said: “Indeed we are delivering stationery to schools in the province. At the weekend we were at 70 %.

“We should be able to deliver stationery to our schools. We are obliged to do so. We’ve committed to our people and the schools that we should be able to finish that work this week.

“Whether the commission had given the instruction or not‚ we had already committed ourselves that by the end of this week we should have wrapped up delivery.

“We might have to mop up here and there‚” Kgetjepe said.

He said the department was not supplying new textbooks to schools‚ but was delivering “top ups”.

“We’ve been supplying top ups from October. Schools had to tell us if they anticipate increase or they are introducing a new grade.”

In a statement it sent last week‚ the commission said it was “considering legal action” against the Department of Basic Education (DBE) after noting with “concern the non-delivery of textbooks and learning materials in Limpopo Province”.
