Spokesperson Kenneth Mokgatlhe noted on Monday that former public protector Thuli Madonsela had said the institution “should be supported by all sectors of society to be able to do its democratic work”.

His comments came hours after EFF leader Julius Malema fired a barrage of criticism at Mkhwebane‚ despite his party approving her appointment last year.

“From today we must stop calling Busi public protector‚ we must call her state protector‚” Malema said at a post-plenum press conference.

Mokgatlhe reacted to this with: “To attack the public protector will not help anyone‚ but will explicitly have higher costs for ordinary citizens who do not have access to courts as they are very expensive.

“It cannot be true to either allow the institution to be compromised by opportunists who have their own narrow desires nor the incumbents of the institution to sell the soul of the institution which is meant to protect the public.

“The attack on that institution is the direct attack on the poor because the institution was meant to service the ordinary South Africans to ensure accessibility to justice‚ but corrupt politicians‚ wolves are politicising the institution.

“We will lose our trust and confidence for this important institution because of what wolves seeks to do.”

Mokgatlhe said that instead of “behaving like a dominant faction within the governing party”‚ Mkhwebane should attend to “important cases of ordinary South Africans”.

“The incumbent should also stop her obsession with the work of her predecessor advocate Thuli Madonsela. She should just progress from where advocate Madonsela left and do more sterling work that the institution have been doing most recently.” – TMG Digital
