A Durban man who was allegedly beaten by a group of drag racers for getting in the way of the race has laid a charge of assault against his attackers.
Kuben Pather‚ 33‚ whose attack was captured on video that went viral on social media last week‚ said on Monday: “The investigation is in progress but I have been advised by the investigating officer not to speak to the media about the attack.”
The small plant mechanic with the eThekwini Municipality said he opened the case against his alleged attackers at the Sydenham Police Station over the weekend after the incident which took place at a petrol station on Durban’s Umgeni Road last week.
In the video‚ a group of men are seen repeatedly kicking Pather‚ who is seen clutching his head and struggling to get back on his feet while bystanders were looking on.
Pather‚ from Chatsworth‚ told Durban’s East Coast Radio that he had skipped a red traffic light and drove onto the road the men were racing on as it was late and he was trying to avoid being hijacked.
He said he was approached by the racers drivers when he stopped to buy food at the petrol station. He described his attackers as very young.
Pather‚ who is heavy pain medication after the attack‚ said the bystanders who can be seen in the video did nothing to help him‚ except for one person who returned his wallet and phone to him.
Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane confirmed that Pather had laid an assault case but no arrest has been made.
