Police are searching for poachers who killed a white lion and tried to kill two other lions in Limpopo. The white lion was discovered on Tuesday morning without its head and paws.

“The suspects appear to have been disturbed as they also attempted to remove the skin but failed‚” said Limpopo police spokesman Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.

Police said the poachers are believed to have thrown “poisoned chicken meat” into the lion enclosure.

“All three lions that were in the cage ate the meat. The other two lions were only incapacitated due to the effect of the poison but the white one unfortunately died. The suspects then cut the paws‚ head and attempted to remove the skin‚” he said.

Police are searching for the suspects and have called on anyone with information to contact the nearest police station.

The South African Predators Association has said the industry has seen a significant increase in poaching incidents‚ with particularly lions being targeted.

Last month Limpopo farm owner Andre de Lange discovered three of his lions had been killed. The lions were also poisoned before their paws and heads were cut off.

De Lange said the incident would cost him R900 000 in damages.
