New Tourism Minister Thoko Xasa appears to have hit the ground running.
Xasa‚ who was promoted from deputy to minister of tourism in last week’s cabinet reshuffle‚ told Sowetan that Wednesday was the first day she was occupying the office that belonged to her predecessor‚ Derek Hannekom.
This is because she spent Monday at a local government conference her department holds every two years with the aim of finding ways municipalities could support tourism.
She said her department would invite enterprises across all sectors to provide their products and services to the industry which employs more than 700 000 people.
“We need the [service providers] to organise themselves. It is going to be our task to make sure we mobilise [township entrepreneurs to mobile themselves]‚” she said.
She said the plan was to identify entrepreneurs operating in tourism hotspots and assist them to grow their businesses through funding and educational programmes.
Xasa said the intention was to also rope in businesses from other industries to provide products and services to township entrepreneurs.
She added that she would encourage established businesses to support emerging entrepreneurs.
“We are not only focusing on [businesses] in hospitality and tourism because they need other sectors to survive. So it is an invitation to enterprises across the value chain to participate‚” she said.
