Armed robbers committed a brazen heist at Durban’s popular Elangeni hotel on Tuesday afternoon‚ as the tourism Indaba‚ which attracts international delegates‚ kicked off.
Police are now combing the city in search of the four men who walked into the hotel’s curio store and robbed employees.
Police spokesman Captain Nqobile Gwala said the men posed as customers before brandishing firearms and demanding jewellery.
“The men escaped in a car. We are treating this as business robbery. No injuries were suffered‚” she said.
Since the beginning of the year over two dozen Durban jewellery stores‚ located mainly in shopping malls‚ have been hit.
In January the notorious “hammer gang” – which struck six jewellery stores in KwaZulu-Natal in two weeks – smashed their way through Osiniq Jewels at the Hilton Hotel in Durban where they stole jewellery worth R2-million.
