Riot police used stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse a group of protesters in Durban as unrest – linked to anti-immigrant sentiment – spread to Chesterville on Wednesday.
Police have been on standby in the township for most of the night as crowds of people demonstrate against kidnappings‚ mostly confined to the realm of rumour.
Wednesday’s incident follows a spate of unrest and looting in KwaMashu.
Two men were detained and are expected to be charged with public violence. Running battles between police and protesters continue in the township.
This is a developing story.
