SAPS spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said public order police had been deployed to the Malagazi area following reports of protest action which began at 3am.
He said the group swelled from about 50 people to more than 100 and there were reports of cars being stoned. The protests were linked to service delivery complaints.
Alpha Alarms‚ a security company in the area‚ warned residents in Ispingo‚ Lotus and Orient Park to avoid the area as the protesters had become violent.
“Violent protest action on the M35/Orient Hills/Old Main Road-Isipingo intersection. About 100 protesters believed to be Malukazi residents stoning vehicles… burning debris on the roadway. NO GO ZONE!!! Please stay clear from area. Use alternative route‚” the company’s bulletin said.
The area was in lockdown last week when dozens of taxi drivers blockaded roads in protests against Toyota over the the alleged rising price of taxis.
