South Africa Bids Farewell To Veteran Thandi Klaasen

Mzansi honoured Thandi Klaasen in a funeral fit for a queen this morning.

The Sophiatown veteran jazz singer passed away on 22 January after a brave fight with pancreatic cancer, leaving behind her daughter Lorraine Klaasen.

Speaking fondly at the funeral, Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa paid homage to Klaasen in his speech and encouraged people to support South African musicians, especially those who fought for South Africa’s liberation.

“Mam’ Thandi and her generation were not just entertainers, they sacrificed their lives fighting for the struggle. She embraced love and hope in her music,” Mthethwa said.

Klaasen’s funeral took place at the DJ Thomas Hall in Alberton before the procession moved to the Thomas Nkobi Memorial Park.

Music and political bigwigs such as Thabo Mbeki, Yvonne Chaka-Chaka and Sibongike Khumalo paid their last respects.
