Two chances that cannoned off the post on Wednesday took the unfortunate forward up to seven for the season, more than any other player
Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is a match for any defender in the world, but it is a more static opponent that has most frustrated him so far in the 2016-17 season.
Ronaldo brought his side back within a whisker of extra time on Wednesday in a Copa del Rey tie eventually won by Celta, who prevailed 4-3 on aggregate following a 2-2 draw in Galicia.
Madrid dumped out of Copa del Rey
The striker came up big with a ferocious free-kick to tie the game at 1-1 after Danilo had heightened his side’s woes with an unfortunate own goal.
But it could all have been so different had the Portuguese taken advantage of two golden chances that bounced off the post within seconds of each other with the game still goalless.
Those misses mean Cristiano has seen his efforts denied by the woodwork no fewer than seven times this season, more than any player in La Liga – while Madrid, with 24 spurned chances, lead the team rankings.
In total Ronaldo had six shots against Celta, a game high, but only two were on target.
It was not all doom and gloom for the misfiring forward, though – his free-kick meant he became the first man in Europe this season to net one in three different competitions in club football.
