Manchester City started strongly and Leroy Sane may have done better when he got on the end of Raheem Sterling’s cross but his header was a limp one in the third minute. Yaya Toure then created a good chance for David Silva but the Spain international saw his shot palmed away by Wayne Hennessey.

In the 32nd minute Palace had their first real chance of the game when a free kick from the right was headed over by Christian Benteke. Moments later Lee Chung-yong fired a cross into the box from the left and it fell to James Tomkins who forced Willy Caballero into a good save.

Yet, City would hit the front before the break when Gabriel Jesus accurately picked out Raheem Sterling’s run in the box and the England international did well to finish past Hennessey in the 43rd minute. A minute later Jesus could have made it 2-0 but the keeper blocked his strike with a solid save.

After the interval, Loic Remy missed a glorious chance to equalise after finding himself in front of goal and a cross found him free in space. However, he shot over the bar when it looked easier to score. Palace would pay for that miss when Sane finished a pass from the talismanic Silva in the 71st minute.

Jesus had a chance to make it 3-0 late on but after rounding Hennessey from Toure’s through ball, he lost his footing and the chance was gone. Nonetheless, Toure added a third deep into injury time after he hit a beautiful free kick from distance that gave the keeper no chance.
