Manchester City have taken the decision to take their goalkeeper out of the firing line, and his replacement says the Chilean has responded positively
Willy Caballero insists Claudio Bravo’s reaction to being dropped from the Manchester City team has been “fantastic”.
The Chilean has endured a tough start to life in the Premier League, having been lured away from Barcelona last summer.
Courtois: I feel sorry for Bravo
Pep Guardiola saw him as the ideal ball-playing last line of defence in a side expected to work their way out from the back.
Bravo has, however, struggled with his feet and handling, with the English top-flight exposing flaws in his game.
He has now been taken out of the firing line, but his replacement between the sticks says the 33-year-old has accepted the decision gracefully and offered his full support to those being selected.
Caballero told reporters after City’s 2-1 victory over Swansea City on Sunday: “It’s not an easy week for him but his behaviour is fantastic.
Pep: Bravo faced more pressure at Barca
“He supports me and we are working really hard and he has a competitive mind so he’s doing very well.
“[Guardiola] told me before the West Ham game that I was going to play. I accepted it immediately, I loved it immediately and I tried to do my best during the game.
“[Against Swansea] I had another opportunity so I try to be positive and concentrated on every single ball. But it was a decision and I try to be working really hard for the rest of the week but he always makes the decision for the team.”
Caballero is now charged with the task of tightening things up for City, and he believes that he has improved under Guardiola’s guidance and is ready to embrace the Catalan’s philosophies.
“I have to improve all the time. I feel that I improved with my feet from the time the boss arrived here,” the Argentine added.
James: Criticism of Bravo unfair
“Not just me, the centre-backs, the full-backs — we have to play from the back and do a lot of things with the ball now and for sure we have to improve.
“Claudio is a fantastic player, a fantastic keeper and we have to respect him because he is probably the keeper (with the most) titles in his country in the last two years.”
