Claudio Ranieri’s men enjoyed an FA Cup win in midweek, but our tipster is backing Paul Clement’s charges to take the points from Sunday’s showdown
The battle to beat the drop from the Premier League is intensifying and there is a crucial clash at the foot of the table as Swansea City play host to Leicester City.
Leicester, of course, were crowned as champions last season, but memories of that sensational title triumph must, at times, seem distant to fans of the Foxes, for Claudio Ranieri’s men have endured a dismal domestic campaign and they find themselves just one point above the relegation zone going into this weekend’s fixtures.
Swansea are level on points with Leicester City, but there is an air of positivity surrounding the Swans under the stewardship of Paul Clement; since the former Derby County manager took up the reins in south Wales, his side have claimed vital league victories against both Liverpool and Southampton, while Swansea were desperately unlucky to lose against Manchester City last weekend, conceding a stoppage time winner to Pep Guardiola’s charges.
As such, Sunday’s hosts are chalked up as Betfair’s 7/5 (2.40) favourites to take all three points from this tussle, while the odds compilers offer 23/10 (3.30) that both sides are forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
The Foxes have suffered defeat in each of their last four league fixtures, conceding 10 goals without reply, while Ranieri’s men have picked up just three points – all from draws – from their 12 Premier League matches away from home thus far this term; Leicester can be backed at 21/10 (3.10) to buck the trend by claiming a vital victory at Liberty Stadium.
There have been more than two goals scored in each of Swansea’s last 12 Premier League matches and Betfair Sportsbook offer a tempting 19/20 (1.95) quote that the trend continues this weekend, while the same firm go just 8/11 (1.72) that both teams are on target – a selection that would have seen punters profit from four of the Swans’ last five fixtures.
Leicester, though, have scored just a single goal in their last seven Premier League fixtures and the Foxes appear to have been engulfed by a fear of failure; they will have been lifted by their midweek win over Derby County in an FA Cup fourth round replay, but Ranieri will have been left slightly frustrated that his team needed extra time to see off the Championship side.
The 65-year-old – who received backing from the club’s hierarchy at the beginning of the week – will, undoubtedly, be acutely aware, too, of the necessity to get back to winning ways in the Premier League if his side are to beat the drop this season.
This fixture, though, looks to be coming at the wrong time for the misfiring Foxes; Swansea have taken full points from three of their last five Premier League games and the hosts are again playing with confidence; Clement’s charges, therefore, are good value at 7/5 (2.40) with Betfair to take another significant step towards survival by beating Leicester City at Liberty Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
