The Arsenal manager claims to be bemused by the furore surrounding the future of a player who remains under contract until the summer of 2018
Arsene Wenger is struggling to comprehend the “anxiety” surrounding Alexis Sanchez’s contract situation at Arsenal.
The Chilean forward continues to generate almost as many headlines as his manager, with both men embroiled in long-running sagas regarding their respective futures.
While Wenger is set to see his current deal expire at the end of the season, Alexis remains tied to the Gunners until 2018.
‘Arsenal fans want the team to lose’
It is for that reason that the Frenchman is refusing to get caught up in a storm suggesting that the 28-year-old is destined to make an imminent departure, with Chelsea the latest club to be heavily linked with a big-money approach.
“He has one-and-a-half years [left on his] contract,” Wenger told reporters when quizzed on the Alexis exit rumours.
“I don’t understand that debate. Our job is to perform as long as we are here. I do not understand this kind of anxiety. It is absolutely denying what a professional guy is about.”
Speaking at a press conference ahead of a midweek meeting with West Ham, Wenger was also asked to address the ongoing protests against his reign.
That campaign was taken to the gates of the club’s training ground on Tuesday, having previously been staged in the streets around Emirates Stadium and the sky above The Hawthorns ahead of a Premier League clash with West Brom.
Wenger admits to being aware of the unrest but insists that he and his players remain fully focused on the task in hand, with there no intention on their part to allow external influences to become a distraction.
‘Sanchez will end up at Chelsea’
He said: “Honestly, I am professional and when you are professional you perform in ideal conditions and non-ideal conditions.
“I love to win football games. I just focus on that. I work for my club with honesty and integrity. I am not scared. I accept the judgement of people and focus on the game. That’s it.
“Everybody has an opinion today. What is important is guys who can influence the results stick together.”
