James Rodriguez transfer news: Real Madrid star will follow Falcao & Diego Costa in long line of Mendes-Mourinho signings
The Manchester United manager has often called on his fellow Portuguese for players throughout his career
James Rodriguez is being heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and the completion of the transfer would see Jose Mourinho sign another player represented by ‘super-agent’ Jorge Mendes.
James could be Man Utd’s Hazard
Throughout Mourinho’s managerial career, the ‘Special One’, who is also a Mendes client, has regularly signed big-name players from the books of his compatriot.
Mourinho and Mendes, whose most famous client is Cristiano Ronaldo, initially worked together when the former left Porto to become Chelsea manager and the likes of Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira and Tiago followed him to Stamford Bridge.
His time at Real Madrid saw him capture the signatures of Fabio Coentrao and Carvalho, who both went on to have respectable careers at the Santiago Bernabeu.
A major coup for Mourinho was the signing of Angel Di Maria for Madrid from Benfica for £28 million in 2010. The Argentine playmaker proved to be an influential performer for the Spanish giants and was someone Mourinho had an eye on for some time.

Perhaps the most significant of deals done came in the form of Diego Costa, who joined Chelsea in a £32 million deal from Atletico Madrid in 2014.
That signing proved to be a masterstroke as Costa went on to lead Chelsea to a Premier League title in his first year, showing exactly why Mourinho chased the Spaniard’s services.
And, in the summer of 2015, Mourinho brought Radamel Falcao to Chelsea on loan from Monaco after the Colombian striker had endured a fitful campaign at United.
Other clients of Mendes who have been signed by Mourinho over the past decade and more also include Ricardo Quaresma, and Rodriguez could be the next on the list amid speculation he is on his way to Old Trafford this summer.
Mourinho, who has been a client of Mendes’ for over 12 years, said in 2010 after the super-agent picked up FIFA’s agent of the year award: “When I was told there was to be an award for the best agent in the world, I was immediately convinced that the award had to be for Jorge Mendes.”
Mendes has a pool of roughly 70 footballers on his firm GestiFute’s books, and the combination of Portuguese roots and a strong professional relationship has surely helped many of those to play for Mourinho teams.
