The Old Trafford club have announced their first signing of the summer and his new team-mate has welcomed him to the club
Manchester United defender Phil Jones has welcomed new signing Victor Lindelof to Old Trafford and is looking forward to fighting for his place in the team.
Man Utd announce £40m Lindelof deal
United announced the signing of the Sweden international from Benfica on Wednesday evening in a deal worth £40 million, with the 22-year-old signing a five-year deal.
Lindelof joins Jones, Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo in the United defensive pack as Jose Mourinho shuffles his pack ahead of the 2017-18 Premier League season.
And Jones, who made 18 starts under the Portuguese last term, believes the signing of Lindelof will only benefit those already at the club.
Lindelof: Signing for Man Utd was an easy decision
“We’re Manchester United, we’re going to attract the best players and the biggest players,” Jones told Sky Sports.
“It would be a strange summer if we weren’t signing players like that. Competition is always good.
“I’ve spoken to the manager [Jose Mourinho]. He just asks how you’re feeling, how you’re doing – just a normal conversation between player and manager.
“He’s a good man-manager, he’s like that with all the players.”
Morata agent confirms Utd bid
Lindelof becomes United’s first signing of the summer transfer window, costing £30.9m up front, with the remainder of the balance to be handed over if certain agreed targets are met during the course of the defender’s stay in Manchester.
The centre-back, who played 73 times for Benfica and earned 12 caps for Sweden, leaves the Primeira Liga side with three league titles, two national cups, a league cup and a Portuguese Super Cup to his name.
