KUMI. A father of three accused of stealing dried potato flakes, famously known as Amukeke in Teso has been killed by an irate mob in Kumi District.
According to witnesses, the deceased identified as Pius Oire, a resident of Ototolim Ogino Sub-county, was allegedly found with two basins of dried potatoflakes belonging to residents of Ocopo village.
The area councillor for Ongino Sub-county, Mr Patrick Okillan, said the deceased could have been forced to steal because of the prevalent food shortages in the region.
Mr Okillan confirmed that in Kumi District, Ongino leads with the most affected villages surviving on a single meal a day, adding that in addition to last year’s drought, Ongino has previously been prone to water logging that explains the current food crisis.
Mr Jacob Emau, the OC Ongino police post, confirmed Ogire’s killing, saying they are investigating the issue and that those responsible for the murder will be arrested.
“We will not allow lawlessness to prevail. We are on ground investigating the matter,” he added.
Meanwhile, the area councillor for Arapai Sub-county, Soroti District, Mr Micheal Akol, has challenged residents to desist from selling their land in order to raise money to buy food.
“I know we are hard pressed but let’s spare the family inheritance for posterity purposes,” he appealed.
The Area LC1 chairperson, Mr Stephen Odolon, said about 40 families have let off their land in quest for money to stave off the biting food crisis.
“We can’t avert a crisis using a crisis, let’s spare our land,” he added.
