At least two people have been confirmed dead and another seriously injured in a motor accident after a trailer veered off the road in Bugembe Town council along Jinja-Iganga highway on Sunday.

The officer in charge of traffic Jinja Central Police Station, Mr Francis Onen confirmed the incident saying two bodies of the deceased were recovered from a muddy swamp where the trailer’s head rested on them.
Mr Onen said the accident was caused by the recklessness of the driver of another trailer, registration No. ZC 0811/KBJ-505S that overturned in the middle of the road. Therefore as the driver of the second trailer registration No. T 701DBS /T606DGB tried to avoid colliding with the first one, he knocked three people, killing two on spot and injuring the other.

“I can confirm two people have died on spot as result of an accident and one injured. The community is trying to help police to identify the bodies,” said Mr Onen.

The bodies have been taken to Jinja Hospital mortuary for postmortem.

However, police is looking for the driver who is said to have run after causing the accident.

Bugembe Town Councillor representing Ward 1, Mr Michael Kisame urged Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to put humps between Kampala University- Jinja Campus, Katente and Wanyama stages, stressing that the area has become a killer zone with people losing their lives in motor accidents every week.

“We are giving UNRA five days to come and rescue the situation here by putting humps. If UNRA does not respond to our request positively, we are going to demonstrate because we cannot continue seeing our people perish when something can be done,” said Mr Kisame.

Meanwhile, three people have also been confirmed dead and two others seriously injured in an accident involving a vehicle and two motorcycles at Butangasi village, Masaba Sub County in Busia District.
The accident occurred when a vehicle Reg No UAW 671R which was coming from Busia town along Majanji- Lumino road collided with two motorcycles killing three people who were travelling on one of them.
