The wife to Capt Mike Mukula has denied allegations a local newspaper published two years ago that she fought her husband for having extramarital affairs with other women.
Ms Gladys Mukula said this while testifying before Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court in a case in which Mr Mukula accuses Francis Tumusime alias Tinywana, a journalist with Hello newspaper, of tarnishing his name.
Mr Mukula is NRM party vice chairman for Eastern region and former MP for Soroti Municipality.
“For the 35 years I have been with my husband, I have never seen him with any girlfriends or had a fight with him over adultery,” Mukula’s wife testified.
She further said she would get so surprised if anyone told her that her husband had a girlfriend.
She said at the time the story was published asserting that she had fought her husband in Soroti District upon catching him with some girls, she had taken a long time without visiting the district.
“I am not aware of any girls my husband always travelled with to Soroti as stated in the defamatory story. All I know is that he [husband] travels with his driver,” Ms Mukula said.
The accused Tumusime, 44, is charged with two counts of libel under Section 179 of the Penal Code Act, which offences he denied.
Prosecution contends that on July 18, 2014, within Kampala, Tumusime with intent to defame Capt Mukula published an article titled, ‘Wife Nabs Mukula with Muk Gal’ in Hello newspaper, alleging that the said Capt Mukula had had an extramarital love affair with one Rachel Naijuka aka Tania which was false.
The prosecution further states that on July 20, 2014, still within Kampala and in the same newspaper the accused published another story that Mrs Mukula had warned her husband over another girl a one Rachel Bushomero.
Mr Mukula says both allegations damaged his reputation and exposed him to contempt or ridicule among the public.
The trial magistrate, Mr Jamson Karemani, adjourned the case to March 28 for further hearing.
