Former Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Lira, Ms Joan Pacuto, has been hospitalised after she reportedly collapsed in police cell following her arrest for allegedly holding an illegal assembly.
Ms Pacuto was on Friday morning arrested with five other people, including the former MP for Kwania County in Apac District, Mr Tom Odur Anang.
They were all detained at Lira Central Police Station but before she could record statement, the ex-RDC collapsed in the police cell on Friday afternoon, and was rushed to Lira Medical Centre for medication.
“We (police) have only given bond to the other mama who collapsed – the former RDC of Lira. She is supposed to report back to police on Monday when we are supposed to take them to court,” the North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, Mr David Ongom Mudong, said.
The suspects allegedly convened an illegal meeting in which they had planned to elect another person to replace the current paramount chief of Lango, Mzee Yosam Odur Ebii.
According to Mr Ongom, the suspects held a mutual consultative meeting on Thursday with the security committee headed by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Lira, Mr Robert Abak, in which they “agreed” to suspend the planned elections.
“They even agreed that the election would not take place, but again on Friday morning, they went ahead and convened a meeting at the home of Mr Vincent Oling at Pipes, Ojwina Division in Lira Municipality with intent to elect the new paramount chief,” the police spokesperson added.
Police have preferred charges of convening an illegal assembly, contrary to the Public Order Management Act, against all the six suspects.
