KAKUMIRO: Police in Kakumiro District are holding four people for allegedly killing a 60 year-old woman and later torching her body in a banana plantation.
Kakumiro District Police Commander Hassan Mugerwa said the suspects allegedly killed Nakimpi Luyombo, a mother of 9 and a resident Semuto Village, Kikada parish in Kasambya Sub-county.
The suspects allegedly used sharp objects to stab Luyombo and later set her body ablaze few meters away from her tomato garden.

How it happened
MsNakanwagi Kobusinge the daughter to the deceased said her mother left home on Monday morning to attend to her garden, but never returned. This threw them into panic as they organised for her search which was joined by residents and local leaders.
She added that one of the residents, who is currently being held as a prime suspect, emerged from the garden holding her sandals and a piece of cloth claiming that the old woman had set his tomato garden on fire.

The suspect survived lynching by the angry residents who suspected him of knowing the whereabouts of the deceased. He was arrested and detained at Kasambya Police Post on Monday evening.
The family members, residents and local leaders resumed the search on Tuesday morning only to find the deceased’s body burnt almost beyond recognition in the banana plantation.
Mr Fred Bukenya, one of the family members of the deceased said she had no land wrangles with anyone. He suspected that the deceased was targeted by the assailants who killed her and burnt the body to conceal evidence.
Angry residents, upon recovering the body stormed Kasambya Police Post to lynch the suspect who was already detained there but police responded by firing bullets to disperse them.
Mr Mugerwa said police arrested three more suspects in connection with Luyombo’s death.

‘‘According to preliminary investigations, the deceased was allegedly killed over a purported land dispute. Police has handed over the deceased’s body to relatives for burial after a postmortem examination’’ added Mr Mugerwa.
He disclosed that the suspects will be charged with murder as investigations into the matter kick off.
This is the fifth murder case to be recorded in barely two months. On Tuesday, Daily Monitor reported a story in which Police in Kakumiro District arrested a man for allegedly killing his ex-wife in front of her children.

The incident happened on Sunday in Kadunduma village, Kinunda parish, Kitaihuka Sub-county, Kakumiro District.
The suspect aged 34 is a resident of the same area who allegedly killed Ms Beatrice Nakingi, a mother of seven.
On February 15, police arrested an 80-year-old man for allegedly killing his wife Teopista Nakefeero, 30, over a family dispute which had caused them to separate.
Police has attributed the escalation in violent crimes involving bloodshed to land disputes, property sharing and domestic wrangles.
By Press time, the four suspects detained at Kakumiro Police Station were yet to record statements.
