Toroma MP, govt officials among 10 killed in Jinja highway crash


MP Cyrus Amodoi representing Toroma county in Katakwi District and a number of Mbale and Busia district officials are among passengers who have perished in the Tuesday evening accident on Kampala-Jinja highway, according to police and Parliament.

“We have heard the same news [about MP Amodoi’s demise],” says Mr Chris Obore, Parliament’s Communications director. Amodoi becomes the second lawmaker in the 10th Parliament to die following that passing on last month of Moroto District Woman MP Annie Logiel.

Parliament tweeted on its official handle on Tuesday that: “Parliament announces the death of Hon. Cyrus Amodoi (Toroma County) following a motor accident at Kitigoma on Jinja road last night.”

The Tuesday accident at Mbikko- Kitigoma in Buikwe District involved three vehicles and witnesses as well as police say two speeding commuter taxis from Kampala and heading to Mbale and Busia districts, respectively, slammed back-to-back into an oncoming Fuso truck that had lost control.

Some of the dead have been identified as Busia councilor Mary Goretti Nafula, Lunyo Sub-county councillor Nafula, the driver Ronald Wabwire and a one Steven Oguttu. The others are Budaka District Personnel Officer Jerome Negule and Peter Shiminyu from Mbale District. Three people in the Busia-bound taxi died, preliminary reports show.
MP Amodoi was reportedly travelling in the Mbale-bound taxi, and we could not immediately establish his destination.
A lady who had just graduated from Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi, and was wearing her gown, also died.
Savannah Regional Police spokesperson, Mr Lamek Kigozi, said the victims were taken for treatment in Jinja and Kawolo hospitals.
