Policemen arrested for killing child

Police in Mityana District have arrested two of its officers for allegedly shooting dead a three-year- old girl.

Viola Nakawuka was being carried by her mother Ms Diana Nabakooza, a resident of Guluma village in Butayunja Sub-county, Mityana District, as she returned home when four Flying Squad policemen opened fire at them.

Speaking to Daily Monitor on Tuesday, Mityana District police commander Emmanuel Mafundo confirmed that two of their officers; Sgt Godfrey Egwang and another, whose identity was not readily established, were arrested on Monday evening over the girl’s death.

He said the two other officers were on the run. He said Sgt Egwang is considered the main suspect in the incident.

“Preliminary police investigations point at Egwang to have pulled the trigger that resulted into the death of the baby girl,” Mr Mafundo said.

According to him, Sgt Egwang and his co-suspects will face charges of murder.

He added that Sgt Egwang had already been transferred to Kampala Central police station for custody as police continued the hunt for the remaining suspects.

Mityana regional police commander Fred Kigima said the girl’s mother and another resident identified as Ivan Kito sustained serious injuries during the shooting and had been admitted to Mityana Regional Referral Hospital in the Intensive Care Unit.

An eyewitness who preferred anonymity said the Flying Squad policemen had been invited by one Kalumba, a traditional healer to guard him against an angry mob that had threatened to lynch him. He did not say why the mob wanted to lynch the healer.

On Monday evening the Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura sent condolences of Sh2m to the bereaved family. Gen Kayihura’s message was delivered by Mr Asuman Mugenyi.
