Stella Atyang, a niece to the late Moroto Woman Member of Parliament Annie Logiel, is the ruling NRM party flag bearer for the parliamentary by-election slated for April 26, 2017.
The district woman parliamentary seat fell vacant in February this year following the death of Logiel.
Atyang who had a tight race with the former MP for Moroto district Margaret Iriama, polled 13,339 votes against 11,417 garnered by her challenger. The party had 41,320 registered voters.
The election had ethnic undertones with Iriama, who is married to the Tepeth, grabbing almost all the votes in Tapac and Katikekile which forms the Tepeth county. The Matheniko in Rupa and Nadunget also stood by Atyang. Moroto Municipality with the lowest voter turn up split the votes, giving Iriama a slim lead with only 55 votes out of 1,435 total number of votes cast.
Dr. Tanga Odoi, the Chairperson NRM electoral commission while declaring the results urged the two women to join hands and work together to enable NRM win in the final election. Odoi sealed off any likelihood of a petition against the results on grounds that the election was free and fair.
But according to Margaret Iriama, the election was neither free nor fair to her side. She says her final decision to either consent or defy the results by contesting as an independent candidate will be made after consultations.
In the 2016 elections, Iriama contested as an Independent candidate after losing to Annie Logiel in the NRM primaries. Iriama represented Moroto district between 2011 and 2016.
Electoral Commission will conduct nominations of candidates from 6th to 7th April. Campaigns will run from April 10th to 25th.
