Fire guts Ivory Plaza – Daily Monitor

KAMPALA: Fire has gutted Ivory Plaza, a building located in the city center right behind Pioneer Mall.

According to the Officer in Charge of Wilson Road, one ASP Nduhura, the fire started at around 2am and in less than one hour, “the entire second floor was fully consumed.”

“That entire floor is done. The fire was strong and obviously lots of property has been lost although we are yet to establish the extent.”

Ivory plaza is a three storied business building with mostly boutiques, restaurants and mobile phone retail shops.

During day, it is one of the busiest arcades in down town Kampala.

Officer Nduhura suspects that the cause of fire to have been a cooking appliance which could have been left unattended.

“The area where there was a lot of damage had a restaurant and by the time the fire started, there was power. But all the shops on that floor including furniture shops have been consumed,” he said as he showed me an amateur video of the fire, which he could not readily share.

He said there will be further investigations into the matter to ascertain the real cause of the fire.

By the time Daily Monitor visited, the area was still covered in a strong smell of smoke and fire engines were still running and water hydrants were still pumping water to the affected floor.

There were small pockets of onlookers, some crestfallen with their hands on their cheeks and could not engage in a conversation about what they had just witnessed. They seemed to be some of the owners of the destroyed.

“Just leave me, no amount of explanation will make you understand what I am going through now,” one man exploded as I tried to inquire into whether he had been at the scheme and saw what had happened.
