Residents of Rosettenville‚ south of Johannesburg‚ have warned mayor Herman Mashaba not to politicise the drug and prostitution problems in the area.

Mashaba visited the area at the weekend after residents torched property from three houses they believed to be brothels and drug dens run by Nigerian nationals.

Reports suggested that during his visit‚ Mashaba took a swipe at the ANC‚ blaming “the previous administration” for failing to address the residents’ issues.

But Rosettenville community leader Simphiwe Hlaba said it seemed that Mashaba was blank to the fact that their ward has always been in the control of the Democratic Alliance.

“We are not happy with him at all because on the Sunday that he came here‚ he decided to be politically opportunistic‚ blaming the previous administration‚” Hlaba told TimesLIVE.

“We don’t know what he means by the previous administration because the ward we are in has never been run by any other organisation except the Democratic Alliance. This is since 1994‚” said Hlaba.

He accused Mashaba of trying to score political points and mislead people‚ and called on him to retract his statement.

Meanwhile‚ at least two of the houses which were cleaned out by residents were again reoccupied again by the prostitutes.

Community Police Forum leader Godfrey Mtobongwana however‚ said last weekend’s action was just the start of many “clean-up” operations they would embark on.

After failed efforts to get the police to intervene in their plight. Mtobongwana said residents decided to take action for themselves.

“The community decided that let us do as we are doing now. Whether that will be called illegal‚ that is fine. We know that we will achieve a very clean Rosettenville with no drugs‚ no prostitution and no crime‚” he said.
