MUBENDE- Three people died and fifteen others were seriously injured in an accident late on Monday on Bukuya-Kalangalo road in Mubende District.
In a separate accident, a speeding Nissan truck knocked Mr Emmanuel Lukodi, a police officer attached to Kyankwanzi Police Station, dead as he rode on a motorcycle.
Police impounded the vehicle, but the driver involved in the second accident escaped and is still on the run.
The Isuzu truck involved in the Monday accident was transporting mourners and the driver lost control, police said.
The accident occurred in Kaweweta village, about ten miles to Bukuya town in Bukuya Sub- County, Mubende District.
The victims were returning from attending the burial of a relative in Kikandwa village, Bukomero Sub-county, in Kiboga District.
The injured were first treated at Bukuya Health Centre and later transferred to Mityana Hospital for further management.
Police identified the dead as Charles Okio and Jacqueline Nalumansi, both residents of Bukuya Town, and Irene Nalunga from Mubende District’s Bukuya Sub-county. The wreckage of the truck was towed to Bukuya police post as investigators establish the cause of the crash.
Wamala Region Police spokesperson, Mr Norbert Ochom, said preliminary findings show “reckless driving” was a likely cause.
“That driver was speeding and failed to negotiate a corner which caused the truck to overturn,” he said on Tuesday.
The lorry rolled at the exact spot where another accident involving a commuter taxi, also carrying mourners, last year lost control and crashed. The passengers were injured but none died at the time.
