The municipality whose lawmen were videoed pelting four men with apples says it is struggling to track down the victims.
Christelle Vosloo‚ mayor of Theewaterskloof Municipality in the Western Cape‚ pledged on Saturday to “meet with the victims and ensure that they receive all the support available to deal with the trauma they suffered”.
But on Thursday she told TimesLIVE: “My office is attempting to locate the victims and once we know their names and can get into contact with them I will visit them.”
A video of five laughing law enforcement officers hurling apples at the men went viral after TimesLIVE posted it on Saturday. It has been viewed more than 900‚000 times.
Vosloo said on Thursday that the municipality had launched an investigation into the incident‚ which was believed to have happened in the pass en route to Kaaimansgat in the Villiersdorp area.
Internal processes had also begun regarding an alleged breach of the code of conduct for municipal employees.
“The municipality can‚ at this stage‚ not speculate about the status or nature of the internal processes or the investigation as the matter is sub judice‚” said Vosloo.
“If anyone is found guilty of a breach of the code‚ appropriate legal sanctions will be considered.”
