Kampala. Police on Saturday raided the Kampala offices of opposition Forum for Democratic Change party twice arresting three party members.
Policemen in uniform accompanied by operatives wielding guns first raided the party offices at City House, shortly after 11 am and arrested Ayub Kigongo, Mr Robert Mayanja, and Mr Abdul Bakasambe, a lawyer. The trio remains in detention at the Central Police Station, Kampala but are yet to be charged.
FDC Deputy Secretary General (In-charge of Administration) Harold Kaija says the police officers informed him that they have information that the men arrested were painting pigs to be dropped later at different parts of the city.
However, Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesman, Emilian Kayima says they only have one suspect in their custody.
“As far as I know it is Mayanja we have because we have information linking him to the above [pig demos],” he said.
Mr Kayima says police opened a general inquiry file after unidentified people dropped pigs near State House, Nakasero and Sheraton Kampala Hotel and their investigations are what informed the operations.
He said the suspect will be presented to court once their investigations are complete.
“It is ridiculous, you cannot arrest Muslims during Ramadhan on an operation about people who protest by dropping pigs at government offices,” he said.
While the pig demos are not a campaign by the FDC party, Mr Kaija says the party supports any peaceful activities to dislodge the current government from power.
