A new trade union to represent workers in 14 constitutional and independent offices has embarked on aggressive recruitment of members a few days after it was unveiled.

The Kenya Independent Commissions Workers Union (Kicowu) has already received the endorsement of the Judicial Service Commission, the Teachers Service Commission, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, Parliamentary Service Commission, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission among others.

Interim Secretary-General Njeru Kanyamba said already 200 members have registered with the union and they are targeting to have at least 10,000 members.

“Today (Friday) we will start our recruitment at the Public Service Commission and hope to reach more members before the end of the year,” Mr Kanyamba said Friday.

Labour Cabinet Secretary Phyllis Kandie has since authorised the deduction of dues from wages of employees of the commissions and independent offices to the union.
