HARARE – Following Zimbabwe 3-0 victory over Liberia during Sunday’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), the Daily News’ Godknows Matarutse and Annie Mpalume took to the streets to her the views of the fans.
Most of the supporters concurred that the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) should give interim coach Norman Mapeza the job on a permanent basis.

I think for the first time in a long time, I watched an exciting Warriors game. The boys played really well and with that performance I don’t think there is anything that can stop us from qualifying for Afcon in Cameroon. Of course there is room for improvement especially on our finishing. You find that we created a lot of chances but our conversion rate was rather low. So I believe if we can work on that we can only get better. And Mapeza, I think he deserves to be the substantive coach. He has proved himself.

It was a dominant performance by our team. But for me I felt we played a rather weak side and we should be careful how we approach our next matches. That team (Liberia), they never looked like a team that had come to compete. They gave up the fight so easily. My message to the team is rather to keep working hard so that we can improve. The result against Liberia was exciting but let’s not fool ourselves to think that we have suddenly become a complete machine. There is still a long way to go before we can start talking of qualifying for Cameroon.

They played well and I have no doubt that we can go and qualify for the next Afcon. We were too good for the Liberians in every aspect; defensively, attacking and even in our finishing. Some people might want to say that Liberia is a weak team but the truth of the matter is that we were just too good. Mapeza got his cards right and I think Zifa should just appoint him the substantive coach not this interim thing. And this win should also not make us relax. There is need to give the team enough preparations in their next assignments. Remember we still have DR Congo and trust me they are not pushovers so we need to do our things right.

It was a good performance by our boys. I was very happy but now what is important is to be consistent going forward. We hope they will maintain the same energy going forward. It’s difficult though to start thinking of qualifying for Cameroon now; it’s a long road. I think I will be able to know our true strength after playing DR Congo and Congo. But without taking anything away from the team against Liberia, they did very well. I think the other thing is that Mapeza has proved to be a very good and Zifa need to make a decision to hire him permanently.

The Warriors made us very proud. I was so happy that they won.The boys played very well and with that performance, I think they will go all the way to the Afcon. They just need to maintain the level and they will definitely go places. I also think coach Mapeza is the right person for the job and he should be given the post on a permanent basis. We are looking forward to the assignments with the hope that the boys will continue with the good work.
